Wrestling minimum weight calculator
Estimates your minimum wrestling weight and the earliest date you could legally reach a lower class, using the current NFHS and NCAA body fat floors, including the 19 percent floor for girls from 2026-27.
This is an estimate for planning. Official certification is carried out by a qualified health professional at your school and recorded through the NWCA Optimal Performance Calculator. Your state association sets the procedure, and some states apply a variance to the calculated figure. Confirm with them before planning a season around any number here.
What changed for 2026-27
The NFHS raised the minimum body fat for girls from 12 to 19 percent, effective with the 2026-27 season. The floor for boys stays at 7. Many online calculators and state handbooks still show 12, so a number from last season's tool will come out too low.
The gap is large. A girl assessed at 140 pounds and 20 percent body fat carries 112 pounds of fat-free mass. Her minimum weight is about 127 pounds at the old floor and about 138 at the new one. This calculator uses 19.
The new figure sits close to the 5th percentile of body fat among high school female wrestlers in data published in 2025, so the floor now marks the unusually lean end of the population.
How the number is worked out
Body fat percentage splits body weight into fat mass and fat-free mass. The minimum weight is the fat-free mass divided by 1 minus the floor, which assumes every pound lost is fat and none is muscle.
Then the descent. Weight may come down by no more than 1.5 percent of certified body weight per week, so the earliest date for a lower class depends on the starting weight as much as on the target.
The hydration test comes first
Body fat is only assessed after a urine specific gravity test: 1.025 or lower under NFHS rules, 1.020 or lower under the NCAA. A dehydrated wrestler weighs less than his or her real training weight, and every figure after that would start from a false number.
The classes the floor maps onto, all three NFHS sets for boys and girls for 2026-27, are on the high school wrestling weight classes page.

Common questions
What is a wrestling minimum weight calculator?
A tool that estimates the lowest weight a wrestler may be certified at, from body weight and body fat percentage, using the body fat floors set by the governing body. It also produces the descent timeline, capped at 1.5 percent of body weight per week.
What is the minimum body fat for wrestling in 2026-27?
Under NFHS high school rules the floor is 7 percent for males. For females the NFHS raised it from 12 to 19 percent effective with the 2026-27 season. The NCAA uses 5 percent for men and 17 percent for women.
How much weight can a wrestler lose per week?
No more than 1.5 percent of certified body weight per week under NFHS and NCAA rules. For a wrestler certified at 150 pounds, that is 2.25 pounds a week.
How is minimum wrestling weight calculated?
Fat mass is subtracted from body weight to give fat-free mass, and that figure is divided by one minus the body fat floor. A 168 lb wrestler at 12 percent body fat has 148 lb of fat-free mass, which divided by 0.95 gives 156 lb under the NCAA men's floor.
Can this calculator certify me?
No. Official certification is carried out by a qualified health professional at your school and recorded through the NWCA Optimal Performance Calculator. This tool is an estimate for planning a season.
